Knockout Bracket Generator
Type your team names in seed order or let the tool draw them. Odd-sized fields get byes for the top seeds, and the top two seeds cannot meet before the final.
What the Knockout Bracket Generator Does
A knockout (single-elimination) tournament is the simplest format to run: lose and you are out. The hard part for an organiser is the layout. If you have 6, 11 or 13 teams rather than a neat 8 or 16, you need byes, and you need to decide who gets them without handing the strongest sides an easy draw. This tool builds the full bracket for 2 to 32 teams: every round, every match number, and the byes.
How the Bracket Is Built
- The field is rounded up to the next power of two (6 teams become an 8-slot bracket).
- Teams are placed using standard seeding, so in an 8-slot bracket round one pairs seeds 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 2 v 7 and 3 v 6.
- Any slot with no team is a bye, and the team drawn against it goes straight to the next round.
- Later rounds are listed as “Winner of M1 v Winner of M2”, so you can fill in the names as results come in.
The Formulas
Matches = n − 1 | Rounds = ⌈log₂ n⌉ | Byes = 2rounds − n
Worked Example: Six Teams
Six teams need the next power of two, 8, so the bracket has 2 byes and 6 − 1 = 5 matches over three rounds. Seeds 1 and 2 get the byes. Round one is 4 v 5 (M1) and 3 v 6 (M2). The semi-finals are seed 1 v the winner of M1 (M3) and seed 2 v the winner of M2 (M4), and then the final (M5). Seed 1 and seed 2 can only meet in the final.
Using It for Your Tournament
- Seed from something fair. Last season’s table, or the group stage of a mixed event. Our round-robin fixture generator is the natural first stage for a groups-then-knockout event, and the points table calculator produces the seeds.
- Agree the tie-break before the first ball. A knockout cannot end level, so the rules must say what happens after a tie or a washout. See Super Over rules and tie vs draw vs no result.
- Plan reserve time. Knockouts are single-elimination, so one rained-off match stalls the whole bracket. Our tournament guide covers formats and logistics, and the DLS calculator helps with shortened games.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many matches are in a knockout tournament? +
One fewer than the number of teams, because every match eliminates exactly one team and only one team is left at the end. Eight teams play 7 matches, 12 teams play 11 and 16 teams play 15, whether or not the field is a power of two.
What is a bye in a knockout bracket? +
A bye is a free pass into the next round. It is needed when the number of teams is not a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32). The bracket is sized up to the next power of two and the empty slots become byes, so a 6-team field in an 8-slot bracket has 2 byes.
Who gets the byes? +
In a standard seeded bracket the byes go to the highest seeds, so seed 1 and seed 2 skip round one in a 6-team field. With the random draw option the teams are shuffled first, so the byes simply go to whoever is drawn into the top positions.
What is standard seeding? +
Seeds are placed so the strongest teams cannot meet until as late as possible. In an 8-team bracket the first round is 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 2 v 7 and 3 v 6, which keeps seeds 1 and 2 in opposite halves so they can only meet in the final.
What happens if a knockout match is tied or rained off? +
The bracket cannot move on until one team is declared the winner, so your competition rules need a tie-break such as a Super Over, a bowl-out or a higher seed or league position going through. Decide this before the first match. Competitions differ, so follow your own rules.
Should I use a knockout or a round-robin? +
A knockout needs far fewer matches but eliminates half the teams after the first round, so most teams play only one or two games. A round-robin guarantees everyone the same number of matches. Many events combine them, with groups first and a knockout between the group winners.
